JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Late Wednesday evening, the ITA ruled that the match between the WKU and Miami (OH) women's tennis teams that occurred Saturday, February 24, would be declared with no winner.
On Saturday, Lady Topper freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match. However, Miami (OH) defeated WKU on courts two and three and clinched the doubles point.
Graduate senior Elpida Malamou won her singles match outright with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over her RedHawk opponent from the No. 2 spot. Ito was defeated for the first time all season in a 6-4, 6-3 matchup. Miami (OH) violated ITA Rule I.E.3 (Players must play in order of ability) on courts two through four, so wins were awarded to WKU in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in addition to Malamou's initial victory on court two. Courts five and six were left unfinished.
As WKU was ahead 3-2 with three singles wins, both WKU and Miami (OH) fell shy of the necessary four points to clinch the match and the ITA committee declared there would be no winner.
Lady Topper Tennis now has a record of 4-2 on the season and returns to action this weekend against Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
