MUNCIE, Ind. – Lady Topper Tennis came from behind to defeat Ball State on Sunday afternoon in 4-3 fashion. WKU's victory snapped the Cardinals' home winning streak having started the season 4-0 in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. Today's match marked WKU's first ever win over Ball State with the series dating back to 1991.
Play began with doubles action at 12:30 p.m. CT when sophomore Monica Malinen and Moka Ito teamed up once more to defeat a pair of Cardinals 6-0. The duo is now 8-5 in 2017-18 when playing together.
Senior Elpida Malamou and sophomore Natalia De Ugarte partnered up on court two and senior Violetta Shatalova and sophomore Cindy Oest played together on court three. Both WKU tandems were defeated Ball State 6-3 and the Cardinals earned the doubles point.
Moving onto singles action, Ito defeated a Ball State representative on court one with a score of 6-4, 7-5. The next victory came from the No. 2 spot where Malamou defeated a Cardinal 6-3, 6-4. Shatalova edged out her Ball State opponent 6-1, 6-3 while De Ugarte found a way to win on court five with a score of 6-0, 7-6.
Malinen and Oest came up short in the singles round and both were defeated by Ball State players in three sets.
Ball State (5-3) was the 2016 MAC Champion and held a record of 20-3 for the 2016-17 season.
WKU is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. This weekend, the Lady Toppers will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to play Miami (OH) on Saturday and ETSU on Sunday.
