NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In an evening match at the Whitworth Indoor Center, the Lady Toppers prevailed over Lipscomb's Bisons with a 4-2 victory. WKU (2-2, 1-0 C-USA) handed Lipscomb (3-6) its first home court loss of the season.
Play began at 7 p.m. with the doubles matches. Senior Elpida Malamou and sophomore Natalia De Ugarte partnered with each other to defeat a Lipscomb tandem 6-4 on court two. Senior Violetta Shatalova and sophomore Cindy Oest took down a Bison pair on court three with a score of 6-2.
Sophomore Monica Malinen and freshman Moka Ito did not finish their match against the Bisons, but were ahead 5-4 when WKU clinched the doubles point.
Ito claimed her third victory of the season from the No. 2 spot defeating reigning ASUN Women's Tennis Player of the Year, Viktoriya Dzyuba, on a second set tiebreaker with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Malinen earned another point for the Red and White by winning a tough 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 battle against a Bison on court three. In addition to Ito, Oest also won in straight sets playing on court six and defeating a Lipscomb representative 6-4, 6-1.
Malamou came up short in a three-set dual while Shatalova was defeated 3-6, 3-6. De Ugarte had not finished her singles match by the time the Lady Toppers closed on their win.
On Sunday, WKU will face Ball State on the Cardinals' home court.
