BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football wrapped practice Wednesday evening as the Hilltoppers gear up for a Conference USA matchup against the Florida Atlantic Owls this Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. The Nov. 10 kick off at 4 p.m. CT will be the second consecutive road game on the schedule.
The emphasis that is being put on the WKU defense this week is tackling, specifically for the run defense. FAU running back Devin Singletary has already surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in nine games this season, including 184 last week with three touchdowns in a 49-14 win against FIU.
When asked about Singletary and the Owls' offense, redshirt junior Ben Holt said, "He's got really good balance and good vision. They run a lot of different run plays and do it out of different looks ... It should be a fun game."
The linebacker and team captain Holt tied a WKU FBS Era record with 19 tackles on October 27 against FIU and followed that up with another 13 at Middle Tennessee. He leads the Hilltoppers with 88 tackles this season, with Devon Key and Ta'Corian Darden tied for second at 58 apiece.
"Singletary and Kerrith Whyte are both two guys who are hard to touch and hard to tackle at the same time, so I think it will take a group effort," defensive coordinator Clayton White said.
White also stated, "Late in games is when I feel like they've played their best football and that's why they can definitely create some problems for the defense."
FAU scored 35 unanswered points in the second half against FIU to clinch the win. A handful of WKU games have come down to the last quarter this season and the Hilltoppers will need to execute for 60 minutes in Boca Raton as they go toe-to-toe with the Owls.
