Interviews: QB Duncan | QB Shanley | QB Thomas | RB Samuel
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football ran a spirited practice on Tuesday evening in preparation for the team's upcoming opponent, Charlotte, after the bye week. The Hilltoppers and 49ers square off this Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. CT in the Queen City.
With senior quarterback Drew Eckels recovering from injury, all three of the other Hilltopper quarterbacks are competing this week in practice.
"[We] have three quarterbacks ready to go play, and like we said this is going to be really important for us to get the continuity at the position," head coach Mike Sanford said during his Monday press conference.
Redshirt sophomore Steven Duncan threw for 263 yards, one touchdown and one interception in WKU's last matchup against Marshall, a 20-17 loss on Sept. 29.
"I believe that we're all competitive and the best guy will play," Duncan said about the position group. "Coach knows and we're doing a great job of lifting each other up and pushing each other each play."
The bye last weekend provided time for the quarterbacks to study film and rest for the next matchup against the 49ers.
"I tried to relax and get my body right for this next week and study film," redshirt freshman Davis Shanley said. "Make sure if my name is called, every little thing I can get better at and improve on, that I'm ready."
The dynamic Hilltopper quarterbacks can learn something about the position from each other and certainly have already this season.
"Drew's the granddaddy, he's the vet and everything. He keeps us on track, tells us what we need to do, what's coming, what's on defense," freshman Kevaris Thomas said. "Steve is really good with technique so I try and watch him and Shanley is great with the offense. I'm just trying to develop at every stage."
The run game will also have to be up to par as WKU goes against one of the top rushing defenses in the nation, as Charlotte allows only 102.8 yards per game on the ground, good for 10th in the nation.
"I know they're one of the best rush defenses in Conference USA right now, so we're going to give them a challenge," redshirt freshman tailback Joshua Samuel said.
