TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Moka Ito finished third in the first flight singles competition at the FSU All-Conference Showdown this weekend in the Sunshine State.
In the first round of singles on Friday afternoon, Japan-native Ito defeated USF's number one player, Evelyne Tiron, 6-4, 6-2. On Saturday, Ito fell to the ultimate champion of the first flight singles competition, Monica Matias, in a hard fought 6-3, 6-3 battle.
Early Sunday morning, newcomer Ito clenched the third-place title by defeating Katarina Kozarov of Furman 6-2, 6-3. Ito finishes the fall tournament season with a singles record of 9-4.
Ito paired up with sophomore Monica Malinen this weekend to play two doubles matches before retiring from the third. Ito and Malinen fell to Garcia and Hule representing No. 30 FSU with a final score of 8-4. Garcia and Hule went on to win the first flight doubles competition. Ito and Malinen were also defeated by competitors from West Virginia with a score of 8-5.
Lady Topper Tennis will return to action January 13 to play Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
